Inflation rose 0.8 percent in May with cheaper fuel and food helping offset higher housing costs. The 12 month inflation rate dipped to 8.4 percent, the first three month stretch of single digit gains since spring 1978, according to the Labor Department.
Westlake developers threaten to scrap plans for Bassett Stearns and Detroit land and push ahead with apartments if a proposed ordinance requiring building plans with rezoning is passed. The measure aims to map future plans, while developers argue it could delay projects and raise costs beyond $4 million tied to land and retention basins.
President Reagan appears to have picked conservative Southern California jurist J Clifford Wallace for the next Supreme Court vacancy. Wallace, 51, Mormon from San Diego and a Republican with 11 years on the federal bench, is seen as the administration's front runner. Justice Potter Stewart retires July 3 and a mid July announcement is expected.
White House spokesman David Gergen said reports on nominees are premature while sources place Wallace high on the list. In Cleveland federal court judge Frank Battisti ruled John Demjanjuk a Nazi mass killer Ivan the Terrible and must lose his U S citizenship for lying about wartime service. The decision follows five weeks of testimony from Treblinka and Sobibor survivors and reliance on a Soviet-archived ID card. Demjanjuk’s lawyers plan an appeal as Ukrainian protesters gathered outside the courthouse.
Olmsted Falls plans a voter referendum on November 3 to raise the city income tax from 1 to 1.5 percent. The unanimous council vote follows Mayor William Mahoney stating there is no alternative due to rising costs and wage increases in the current employee contract. Finance Director Gerry Geist will outline exact revenue projections in coming weeks. the current tax yields about $380,000 annually.
