Cornell researchers report that 100 grams of fresh apples with skins deliver antioxidant activity equal to 1,500 milligrams of vitamin C, with skins and flesh showing different cancer cell inhibition. In a Nature letter, Rui Hai Liu and colleagues say the blend of flavonoids and polyphenols, not single compounds, drives the benefit. Apple skin extracts inhibited colon cancer cells by 43 percent, flesh by 29 percent.
A JAMA study proposes nationwide stroke centers modeled on trauma units to cut treatment time to 15 minutes and provide rapid access to stroke trained doctors. Lead author Dr. Mark J. Alberts of Duke says such centers could save tens of thousands of lives, especially in rural hospitals.
