Religious strife ends as Mexico allows church services resume
Mexico City June 22 The long-standing clash between the Mexican government and the Catholic church is settled. Catholic services will resume by June 29 under an accord that keeps existing religious laws but allows flexible interpretation to reduce friction. Portes Gil notes three main points including priest registration by church hierarchy, religious teachings for adults and children within churches, and citizen petitions for law changes. The deal ends a discord dating to 1926, though further talks will finalize a written settlement. Interior ministry soon announces release of Catholics held in Mexico City jails.

Smuggling Across Canadian Border Seen as U S Challenge
Washington June 22 Assistant Treasury Secretary Seymour Lowman called extensive liquor smuggling into the United States from Canada a direct challenge to government integrity. He said defiance of the U S government, not the volume of liquor, drives the anti smuggling drive in Detroit. He noted Canadian liquor is largely consumed here but the total smuggled amount is small compared with illicitly manufactured liquor. The cross border liquor last year was valued at about 24 million dollars, a figure he called insig nificant per capita. He warned smuggling has risen steadily, posing a major enforcement problem.
