Carp Invaders May Reach Lake Erie From Mississippi Watershed
The common carp already inhabits the Great Lakes and four Asian species could reach Lake Erie within five years. Carp grow four to six feet and weigh over 100 pounds, threatening native species by feeding on plankton and stirring lake bottoms. ODNR and the Ohio Lake Erie Commission fear ecological and economic damage and explore barriers, while noting rapid reproduction and difficult removal. Brad Dicken, chronicletelegram.com, 329-7147.
