Area deaths bring long lives and separations to Lorain County

Rosetta Lawrence 105 of Elyria and Josephine Novak 69 of Lorain are among several area deaths. Lawrence, born in Sibley Georgia, was a long time Elyria resident active in Second Baptist Church and local clubs. she received honors for historic toll of slavery and voting in Lorain County. Novak, born in Lorain, belonged to Sts Cyril and Methodius Church and left a large family, with services in Lorain. Additional notices include Michael Billick 78 of Lorain, Myra Whitney 92, Robert Winchester 67 of Vermilion, with details on survivors, church affiliations, and funeral arrangements.

Jenkins appointed Penfield principal

LAGRANGE Tim Jenkins, formerly principal at Keystone Middle School, will lead Penfield Elementary School after Craig Phillips resigned to join North Ridgeville. Jenkins has four years as Penfield’s interim, eight years teaching in Keystone elementary programs, and prior district experience in Pennsylvania.

KELYRIA Council approves grading law changes over Smitek case

City committees propose three amendments to the grading permit ordinance to require permits for grade changes of six inches or more, drainage pattern alterations affecting neighbors or rights of way, and extend permit expiration to 120 days. The action stems from a legal dispute with Edward Smitek over topsoil removal on West River Road. City officials note enforcement questions and private-property access issues in the case.

Amherst council debates funding for street resurfacing

Amherst city finance committee could not decide how to fund a street resurfacing program Monday night. A 0.5 percent income tax increase or an amended forgiveness clause, or both, were explored but no action taken. Mishak outlined that a half percent tax would yield about 389000 dollars with non residents paying the bulk.

Fall from moving car injures Elyria girl 17

Elyria Township reports a 17 year old girl fell from the roof of a moving car on Emerson Court Tuesday evening. Nancy Stewart of 252 Cressview Drive is in serious condition at Elyria Memorial Hospital with multiple injuries. The Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Tricia Solak of 5519 Riveredge Drive was eastbound on Emerson Court after 1130 p.m. The girl is the daughter of Dick Stewart owner of Stewart Appliances Inc. Citations have been issued. investigation continues.

Drug arrest marks DUI and cocaine found in search

A 29-year-old man on W 15th Street was arrested at Broad and EB Bridge Street Elyria for driving under the influence and drug possession after an unlawful U Turn. Police found cocaine and marijuana in a follow up search.

Charges in 2 car crash pending for Carlisle man

A Carlisle Township man faces pending charges after a Monday morning crash at Butternut Ridge Road and Ohio 83. Dale Sandvick, 36, was hospitalized with internal injuries, later listed as fair, from a collision with Garland Norris, 73, who was turning onto Route 3 from Butternut Ridge when his vehicle struck Sandvick’s westbound car.

Graves vandalized at Nesbett Cemetery

GRAFTON TWP deputies investigate vandalism at Nesbett Cemetery damaging about 120 gravestones. The act likely occurred Tuesday between 1 and 2 a.m. after a resident’s dog barked, with youths suspected. no witnesses found and the case remains under investigation.

Minority Contractors chief objects to Lorain road bids

Eddie Edwards, president of the Lorain County Minority Contractors Business Association, objects to two road resurfacing contracts totaling 723,459 dollars to Kokosing Construction Co and Akron Paving. He says minority firms must be given preference and notes subcontracting to Lorain GEM Co. The legality of the bids is under review by the Lorain County Prosecutor's Office.

Car crashes into Lorain home at 1914 West 28th Street

A car struck the house at 1914 West 28th Street in Lorain Tuesday afternoon, leaving a four foot hole. Police have not identified the driver. Residents name Raphael as a possible driver, while the car owner says she was driving and will cover damages. Officers towed the vehicle from 2340 Beed Street pending investigation.
