Elyria district plans May vote on a $67 million Elyria High School project with a reduced 3 mill levy costing about $92 yearly for a $100,000 home. State funding could cover about 40 percent after Gov Taft signed a budget bill, though securing approval remains a hurdle.
In November 2001 a $64 million bond plan to build a new Elyria High School on the Ely Stadium site failed by 6,355 to 6,948 votes. The defeat mirrored earlier levy attempts with about 32 percent support versus 68 percent against.
Officials say more than 50 district employees will retire, reducing expenses by about 800000 dollars a year. The offer includes up to 30000 dollars in payments to 39 veteran teachers and two administrators, who will retire this year or next.
Elyria reports indicate county commissioners host routine informational meetings without notifying the public. Legal experts say any discussion of public business qualifies as a public meeting, though officials claim no decisions are made.

Two investment brokers Michael W. Lewis and Daniel P. O'Neil were indicted on four counts each for bribing Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation officials via stays at Florida Keys condos in exchange for state business. Both pled not guilty in Akron.
