Military spends half billion replacing homosexuals
GAO findings show 1980 to 1990 discharges of about 1,500 personnel annually for homosexuality. The Pentagon spent an estimated 498 million in 1980s dollars to recruit and train replacements, with Navy most aggressive in enforcing the ban. The report notes major professional groups dispute the policy and that some NATO and US police bodies see no mission degradation from openly serving gays.
