Ontario to Begin Lake Erie Oil Drilling for $1 Billion

Ontario plans a $1 billion gas and oil venture in Lake Erie despite pollution risks. Eighteen firms, including three U.S. subsidiaries, hold 3.1 million acres of lake bottom leases. Government expects about $100 million in benefits and has drawn $1.5 million in gas from beneath the lake, with fees and royalties of $672,000. Critics warn further pollution could occur, recalling a 1959 spill near Colchester that spurred new drilling rules. Canada and industry defend the plan as a response to dwindling inland gas supplies, asserting studies show hazards can be managed.
