Logan Spradlin, 13, drowned after falling from the Elyria Riverwalk steps near an old mill on Oct. 10 last year. His father Jason Spradlin sues Elyria, S E Johnson Co, and Shelly Co claiming design flaws and hazardous ledges ignored after a 2003 Riverwalk completion.
The seventh annual Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival opens at Veterans Park on Detroit Road. A 6-foot-tall Eddie Van Halen guitar sculpture crafted from duct tape greets visitors, among fourteen artworks and a Twister game as attendees sample food vendors and rides. Avon Lake residents like Jessica Russo join the early crowds attracted by the family friendly event.
Ohio's jobless rate fell to 10.7 percent in May from 10.9 percent in April as manufacturing added workers and census related service jobs boosted employment. The state gained 17,100 nonfarm jobs with 1,700 construction positions linked to stimulus efforts, though exact stimulus attribution remains uncertain.

An 82 year old woman, Wilma Sebastian of North Ridgeville, died after a two vehicle collision at routes 57 and 254 around 7 10 p m Friday. The Windstar passenger vehicle collided with a box truck driven by Gregory Hudnall of Elyria. Hudnall was uninjured and declined treatment. The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating fault and conflicting statements about traffic signals.
Ohio prosecutors urge the state Supreme Court to stop Elyria judge from ruling on Stanley Jalowiec's bid for a new sentencing hearing. Jalowiec, 39, has been on death row since 1996 for the 1994 slaying of police informant Ronald Lally. His lawyers argue the sentencing entry contains technical errors that undermine the verdict and sentencing.
