Bendix May Not Move Elyria Plant to Virginia
Bendix officials consider alternatives to Newport News Va for relocating Heavy Vehicle Systems Group production from Elyria as orders rise for electronics parts and an aerospace contract appears promising. Elyria, with wages around 17 to 18 dollars per hour, has the highest labor costs among nine U S and Canadian plants, pressuring a phasedown that could trim roughly 230 blue collar jobs while about 500 salaried workers remain after the shutdown. United Auto Workers Local 971 ratified a plant closing agreement June 9.
