Backlog Of Orders For Steel Is Still Growing
Tremendous pressure by consumers for finished steel kept producers far behind on orders last week despite record operations. Steel magazine said overall supply is tighter today than two months ago. Mulls will enter the third quarter with heavy backlogs on major products as producers push to satisfy commitments. Normal seasonal declines in demand may ease pressure, while small and some large companies nudged Steel’s index higher to 156.56.

Despite higher finished steel indices, prospects for broad gains remain limited as raw materials rise and scrap prices reset. May output reached a record 8,549,038 net tons with June poised to approach that level, though year-to-year totals lag due to strikes. Districts show varied capacity, majority near full operation while New England and PA trail. The date palm, a long cultivated tree, yields 100 to 600 pounds annually with one cluster weighing up to 25 pounds.
