Tax-laden sewer rental plan faces council opposition
Lusty opposition to Mayor W J Vanoster's sewer rental tax proposal erupted at last night's meeting as council discussed a first reading. The plan would tax water use with a 40 cent monthly minimum, rising for larger users, to fund sewage operations and offset city deficits. Critics warned the measure was premature, unjust to residents without storm sewers, and could drive factories away. Council members argued the city must curb expenses and warned of a referendum if enacted.
