Sparse turnout at Lorain County tax hearing on 0.25 percent sales tax
Lorain County commissioners opened the first of two public hearings on a proposed 0.25 percent sales tax to fund the Sheriff's Office and jail operations. Sheriff Jack Hall and Chief Deputy Tanya Crack urged support as the 2026 budget climbs to about 35.5 million with salary increases. Hall noted personnel changes after taking office, moving several supervisors to road patrol.

Lorain Correctional Institution celebrates inmate achievements
At Lorain Correctional Institution a sweltering gym ceremony honored 64 inmates earning high school diplomas and certifications from Lorain County Community College and Ashland University. Ten more received robotics and readiness certificates as part of a year round program expanding access to college credits and vocational training. One participant, Jalen, read a poem about resilience and personal growth.

Memorial for Michael Pack unveiled in Amherst
Amherst community gathers to dedicate a memorial for Michael Pack age 23 at the Amherst Sandstone Village. The tribute includes a little library bearing his name a future memorial bench a pollinator garden and a QR biography gallery. A $1 400 donation to the Historical Society was noted and his family spoke of his life and loss while friends led the project.
