Ship’s ghost of The Perfect Storm sails again on Ernestina
The Ernestina, the 106 year old schooner, docked at Penn’s Landing after a nine year voyage back to the public as a floating classroom. Engineer Willi Bank, now captain, recalls the 1991 Halloween Storm that nearly sank the ship and claimed the Andrea Gail. The voyage left two boats lost and its crew listened to radio distress while saving passengers. The vessel has a long history from Cape Verde immigrant transport to Antarctic expeditions and is a Massachusetts historic landmark now hosting visitors and education programs. The Perfect Storm film opens June 30 starring Clooney Wahlberg and Mastrantonio.
