Three executions slated over next two weeks
Ohio prepares for three scheduled executions in the next two weeks as court appeals wind down. State officials cite due process and rising pace, while opponents note the rapid sequence in contrast to Texas, which leads in executions this year.
Ohio death row inmates set for rapid execution dates
A 1983 murder defendant is to be put to death by injection Wednesday at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville. Lewis Williams faces June 24 execution for a 1933 murder, Jerome Campbell's June 27 date follows his 1989 aggravated murder and aggravated burglary convictions. The Ohio Supreme Court sets these dates, a shift sped by 1996 reforms that routed appeals straight to the high court, while about 100 older inmates are just finishing their rounds. Public Defender David Bodiker notes the streamlined process pulled many cases together and accelerated the schedule.

City council clash over fee ordinance and street renaming
The council faced a July 1 deadline to pass a fee ordinance for next year. Foltin opposed the hike citing a phasing state gas tax and lack of public input. Several members voted against sending the measure to committee amid debates on timing and openness. The body also repealed a May 12 ordinance renaming West 21st Street to Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard, approving a dual name instead, sparking resident petitions and mixed votes.
