Autobiography of Hon George Metcalf Civil War Reflections
Excerpt recounts Metcalf visiting a National Cemetery near the Yazoo River with a neglected graveyard and exposed coffins. He notes war relics and a guard by the U S Government, then shifts to Mississippi politics with Union League meetings led by carpetbaggers and eloquent yet partisan rhetoric linking religion and politics among newly freed Black citizens. The passage includes vivid anecdotes and sermons comparing biblical figures to political actors.
