Thrifty Nature Use Leads to New Bacteriology Medium
Dr. A L Kendall of Northwestern University Medical School describes a novel culture medium using hog intestine treated with alcohol and dried. He explains the choice of hog intestines, its relation to a mammalian intestinal substance, and notes dog intestines surprisingly work best for testing. The method, though crude, yields progress toward understanding diseases like smallpox influenza arthritis and the common cold. Kendall expresses optimism that the procedure may spark a new development in bacteriology.
