Squeeze a full season from your garden with smart planting
Tim Malinich explains garden planning to extend harvest beyond Memorial Day. Plant cool weather crops early and again in late spring, then stagger warm weather crops every two weeks through summer to maintain fresh produce and a long harvest. Consider succession planting for beans, corn, squash, and beets. Water diligently and use late-season plantings to carry greens into fall.
USDA trims national corn crop forecast on wet spring
Des Moines reports the USDA projects 14 billion bushels of corn this year, down 135 million from last month, yet still above the 2009 record. Yield falls to 156.5 bushels per acre from 158, with regional variability and unchanged corn acres at 97.3 million planted.
