The Ohio House opened debate on the $40 million one year oil sales tax bill amid plans for lengthy floor discussion. Governor White backs a quick vote, but leaders anticipate a tight result with possible adjournment over the week if the measure stalls.
Columbus June 15. A Senate Tax Committee proposal would raise the intangible tax from two to three percent and alter revenue allocations for 1931-52. Senator Frank Littemore backs the plan to fund a state school per pupil amount from utilities and county corporations while local districts receive the remainder. The measure also anticipates a $2 million increase in state revenue and notes the existing tax produced about $18.9 million in 1932.

Lorain county high school bands launch a five week summer concert series starting Sunday at 8 15 p m at Sugar Hill farm north of Wellington The event features the County High school band 70 players from all county schools and marks the second annual concert series with massed performances and soloists from Cleveland schools among the participating musicians.
London reports Britain campaigns to end government subsidies to private business as the World Economic Conference begins detailed organization. Walter Runciman says a special committee is needed. Hendrick Colisin of Holland chairs, James Cox leads the Monetary Commission, which adjourned to Monday with plans to report on subcommittees and monetary proposals.
Washington June 16 Congress adjourned with a record of accomplishments unmatched in peace time. In just over three months the special session enacted 16 key laws pushed by President Roosevelt to realize the New Deal. Major actions include the National Recovery Act launching a vast public works program, Farm Relief and Inflation Act expanding Federal Reserve credit, Emergency Bank Law extending wartime currency controls, and Glass-Steagall Bank Reform Act providing deposit insurance.
Washington June 16 The emergency session summoned March 9 adjourned at 1 21 A M after a Senate vote 45 to 36 approving a compromise that trimmed veterans benefits from more than 900 million to about 600 million. Speaker Rainey and Vice President Garner signed the bill and the House quickly approved the measure amid a wide range of wartime economic reforms.

Oberlin O June 16 The first activities of Oberlin College centennial events began with an informal alumni reception yesterday afternoon. The Conservatory of Music concert and Dramatic Association’s The Tempest opened last night. Today features trustee meetings and Conservatory programs, plus the graduating class exercises and reunions. The Tempest is to be again staged at 9 15 this evening.
Seventy three floats are registered for Oberlin’s Centennial Parade to be held Saturday night. Alumni and student groups lead the entries with community teams from nearby cities also participating. The procession forms at 8 p.m. on South Professor Street and proceeds via Lorain Avenue, North Main Street, College Street, and onto the brick walk to the campus, where floats and autos will be parked near the big tent.
Washington reports the Farm Credit refinancing program under the farm mortgage act aims to open 340 banks in Wisconsin as a dramatic pilot. Administrator Morgenthau announced the plan to cut farm mortgage forms by about 30 percent and extend the program to other states.
Washington June 16 President Roosevelt signed the Industrial Recovery Bill and the Bank Bill marking the core measures of his economic rehabilitation program. The act grants broad powers to regulate industry to avoid over production and unfair competition while funding a $3.3 billion public works program. A Rochester woman Mrs. Harry Rowland and her two children escaped as a fast freight train plowed into their stalled car on the Big Four tracks. She moved them to safety just before the collision, the locomotive hitting and demolishing the rear of the vehicle.
