Plant genes to alter to help crops resist pests
A Washington State University biochemist says the discovery of a plant proteinase inhibitor mechanism could let crops defend themselves against insects without chemical aids. By summer end he plans to insert inhibitor genes from potatoes into a plant lacking them to boost natural defenses and study how the system works.
