Budgeting tips to curb spending at home and car

Kal Waller of the Consumer Credit Counseling Service advises limits on big expenses. Car costs should stay at 25 percent of gross annual income, with monthly payments under 10 percent of take home pay and upkeep under seven percent. Home costs should not exceed 25 percent of take home pay, with a maximum purchase price around two to two and a half times annual take home pay. Save first, shop smart, and beware deceptive packing and ads. Consumers bear ultimate responsibility for sound purchases amid limited protections.
