Estimate Boosted On Seasonal Ohio Farm Labor Needs
Ohio farmers shifted crops boosting 1948 seasonal farm labor estimates by about 1 percent from 1947. More than 10,000 out-of-state workers may be needed before year end, vs 8,000–9,000 in prior years. Ohio Employment Service will not import out-of-state labor if local workers exist. Peak employment likely in mid-September with about 21,000 total farm workers, including 11,500 in tomato and corn canning and 8,500 in corn fields.

Early Cut Grass Legume Mixes Urged by Specialist
Wooster reports Ohio dairy farmers should harvest grass legume meadows early to avoid low quality hay. Economist M A Bachtell cites an alfalfa Timothy mix from Kibull County Experiment Farm showing high protein and milk yield when cut green. He notes grasses aid erosion control and stand persistence but early maturity reduces hay quality. methods like grass silage and later maturing varieties help offset weather risks. Farmers should monitor grass and cut in time.

Big Cut Indicated In Turkey Crop
In Columbus, high turkey prices and rising demand in 1947 dampened 1948 plans. DC Moser, poultry husbandry specialist at Ohio State University, questions whether the 1948 cut is larger than warranted. Hatchery poults are costly, but growers say costs align with production. Moye suggests reducing grow-out costs by minimizing feed waste and using good pasture, notably cloveralfalfa mixes, for pullets. Uruguay forecasts its wheat crop at 484000 tons, among the largest ever.
