Lorain lighthouse tour showcases fortress like structure
Matt Dempsey, marketing chair for the Port of Lorain Foundation, notes the Lorain lighthouse inner rooms restored to historic condition. The 50,000 watt lens powers a 15 mile radius, with 32 inch basement walls and 20 inch first floor walls, reflecting a fortress built to endure nature. The lighthouse opened in 1919, faced planned demolition in 1965, and was saved by weather delays and local preservation efforts.
