A city wide general strike was threatened as union workers picketed Toledo Edison plants to halt electricity to a tri state zone of 500000 people. Union leaders planned a vote to renew actions while non union staff kept boilers functioning to avoid total outage.
Eleven officers head activities for Elyria Aerie No. 401 Fraternal Order of Eagles were installed. Named were Kaiser Haylor Patton France Graber Jensen McDonald Schaefer France French Austin. About 100 members attended. reports on the Baer Braddock fight were received and a hot lunch followed.
A weather note for Ohio calls for showers tonight and Saturday with cooler temperatures expected Saturday along the lake shore. The forecast highlights a coastal influence reducing temperatures near Lake Erie and potential wet conditions across northern regions through the weekend.
James J Braddock hosted reporters as ex champion Max Baer backed away from retirement announcing he will stay active for at least six weeks due to radio contract obligations. Baer will be out of action for about a month because both hands are in bad shape but no fractures were found by Dr O K Parry. In the Gran Chaco Bolivian and Paraguayan troops rest on their arms awaiting peace after three years of war. Clashes ended yesterday as patrols moved only in limited numbers. Generals Felix Estigarribia of Paraguay and Enrique Peneranda of Bolivia reported to their governments that major fighting had ceased and casualties were minimal.
Senate Democratic leaders urged rapid passage of President Roosevelt's social security legislation to reduce major hazards in civilization. Senator Pat Harrison of Mississippi outlined benefits for the aged and needy and predicted passage late next week, with plans to hold the Senate in session tomorrow to accelerate action.
Elyria youths gain more pool time as Y M C A announces exclusive summer schedule. Girls attend as eight to 11 year olds at 10 30 a m 12 to 14 at 11 and high school age at 1 p m with Thursday matrons class at 9 30 a m industrial girls classes at 7 15 p m on Tuesdays and Fridays. Boys groups use the pool each afternoon with Cadets and Preps at 2 p m and Junior B and Junior A at 2 30 p m.

Last minute prep for Elyria High School alumni reunion at the school auditorium at 8 14 tonight. The event, one of the largest in the association’s history, includes class dinners and a general gathering at 8 15. The Playmakers will present Noel Coward’s Hay Fever followed by dancing and refreshments. A brief business meeting will elect officers for the coming year.
Local schools closed for the summer with nearly 5,000 students set to begin vacation after a final report day. Grades and exams wrapped up, teachers prepared grade cards, and discussions focused on plans for the 1935-36 term.
Lorain County milk producers association and county distributors will hold a joint meeting at the Lorain County courthouse Monday evening June 17. The group aims to finalize a marketing plan to take effect July 1 as the Burke bill expires June 30. Milton Bans, president, says the plan will be presented for approval. The meeting opens at 8 o clock and is open to all producers and distributors in the county.
The Lorain County Tuberculosis and Health Association reports rapid progress in preparing a children's health camp at Lorain County Fair grounds. Executive secretary L B Hindman will direct the camp for 59 children selected by nurses after X ray screening. The FERA project is funded by federal funds for staff and food, while equipment and supplies are funded by the local association.
Camp Iss-See-Kes opens Monday with five leaders definitively signed, all college men. two more expected before opening. Leaders include Jay Howenstine, William Gleason, Edward Puff, Bert Schaefer, and Richard Wolff from Elyria Oberlin Medina. Six leaders will supervise at all times along with the director as 42 boys have signed for the first period. Campers depart Y M C A at 9 a m Monday for the camp, returning June 26 for the second period, with more sessions planned and recent improvements funded by volunteers. The 1935 season is expected to be highly successful at the camp.
Columbus dispatch reports Welfare Director Margaret Allman denied cruelty charges linked to the Mansfield reformatory in the death of 16 year old Joseph Matulak of Youngstown. Matulak died of tuberculosis in Youngstown after parole on May 28. Medical and prison records cited by Allman showed substantial weight changes from entry in 1933 to final days before death.
Findlay, June 14. Desso Edward Lovell, 44, an employee at the Hancock brick and tile plant, was suffocated beneath about 10 tons of clay late yesterday. Clarence Smith, 32, another worker, said Lovell climbed the clay bin at 3 PM to inspect why clay halted in the chute. Nearly an hour later Smith found Lovell's feet protruding from the pile.
Secretary of Commerce Daniel C. Roper said bad weather inaccurate forecasts and improper clearance at Albuquerque caused the plane crash that killed Senator Bronson Cutting of New Mexico.
In Cleveland on June 14 a mysterious illness struck Louis Lee's six children from North Olmsted Ohio. Pauline 14 died last night. Brother Frank 13 is in serious condition while Mary 12 is expected to recover. All were stricken June 1. Autopsy may be held today to determine Pauline's death cause.
United Press reports Chinese guerrillas rose in Manchukuo as Japan massed troops along the Great Wall for a North China domination plan. A 5000-strong Kwantung Army brigade near Shanhaikwan may be ready for action, with forces at Miyun Peiping and Chahar Province. analysts foresee a three-way thrust and note an incident June 5 involving four Japanese arrests.
The NRA extension resolution was approved by the House in Senate form, preserving the Blue Eagle skeleton until next April. The measure now goes to the White House for action.
Mechanics groomed the Pan-American Airways trans-Pacific clipper for a flight to the Midway Islands. The plane will take off for Sand Island in the Midway group on Saturday, heading 1588 miles northwest of Honolulu after an 2400 mile 18 hour flight from Alameda. Captain Edward Musick and five aides lead exploratory work toward regular service from California to China. Pan-American crews have built bases and facilities on Coral Island and are now at Guam and Wake Island constructing similar stations.

President Roosevelt averted a 450000 member soft coal miners strike by securing an agreement to extend the present wage contract until June 30. United Mine Workers leader John L. Lewis said both sides would accept the White House mediated terms. Committees from both sides will meet tomorrow to ratify, amid hopes Congress will pass the Guffey Bill to shape industry crisis.
John Aultmyer of Beaver Park reported to the sheriff's department that a man who rented a 12 foot gray boat with brown trim failed to return it last night at about 7 39. The missing man was last seen rowing toward Lorain. The description given: about 30 years old, blond, 4 feet 11 inches, mustache. Sheriff Dick doubted a capsizing.
In Waco Texas a wealthy 45 year old landowner and cotton oil mill proprietor Gay Anderson and 22 year old Dorothy Buchanan, a school teacher, died in a cabin fire at the Alamo Plaza tourist apartments. Neighbors reported flames from a window and firemen found Buchanan under the shower in the bathroom. Anderson, badly burned, initially said no one else was in the apartment.
