Lorain eyes tax hike to fund parks roads amid fiscal watch
Lorain officials consider a 0.25 percent tax on nonresidents with a 1.75 percent credit as a potential funding source. Mayor Rite nauer notes an audit near completion showing both positives and weaknesses in city operations and understaffing. The Streets Department handles 66 parks with 10 of 14 workers, and Parks and Recreation were folded into Streets due to cuts. Engineering estimates at least 35 million needed to resurface streets as city faces ongoing fiscal watch since 2002. The tax could fund more workers and road repairs if approved, amid reduced state aid and upcoming changes to estate and corporate taxes.
