Spencer Hangs Behind as Gerut Seizes Right Field Job
Cleveland Indians veteran Shane Spencer has been largely benched this season as rookie Jody Gerut locks down the right field spot. Spencer entered June with a .231 average over 48 games, 3 homers and 14 RBIs while being moved toward a platoon role behind Gerut and DH Ellis Burks’ absence. Manager Eric Wedge noted the team has faced many right-handed pitchers, limiting Spencer’s chances to start while the rookie Gerut proves his place.

Indians Notes on Vizquel and roster moves roll on
The Indians received good news as Omar Vizquel undergoes knee surgery and aims for a speedy return. Jhonny Peralta is promoted to fill Vizquel’s spot, making the major league roster younger with three years or less big league experience. Burks seeks second opinion on elbow nerve disorder with surgery likely two to four months out. Baez suffers a minor hand wound in a ninth inning play as Cleveland opens a three game series with the Dodgers at Jacobs Field.

Mets owner Fred Wilpon dismissed general manager Steve Phillips amid a 28-35 start and a high payroll, promoting interim Jim Duquette who will seek a permanent role. Former Montreal GM Omar Minaya looms as a likely candidate, with Phillips’ tenure marked by big-name signings that underperformed.
