Close House Vote Seen On Watered-Down Bill To Extend Rent Control
Democratic leaders predicted the House would adopt a watered down rent control extension bill after the Senate approved such a measure. The vote was expected to be tight with controls expiring soon. The Senate 36 to 28 vote supported an extension through December 31 and local option until June 30, 1951. Localities could seek continued federal control through their governments. President Truman favored a straight one year extension, but Rep. Brent Spence proposed a six month local option plan. The House leadership and many lawmakers anticipated a close result.

Study Items In County Budget At Public Hearing
The tentative 1951 county budget of 1,087,000 was examined item by item by county department heads and the county board at a public hearing. Representatives from Elyria Lorain and Ohio Chambers of Commerce attended to seek lower taxes and prudent spending. The budget is about 11,000 less than the 1950 available amount per the budget commission. Real estate tax income is projected lower next year due to a 100 percent base this year, prompting questions over potential tax duplicates amid ongoing county construction. Commissioner President Norman Thompson predicted the budget commission will raise its 1952 certification above the current figure.

Boy is Accidental Shooting Victim in Lorain
Joseph Kotai, 14, of 1693 East Thirtieth Street, Lorain, was accidentally shot by Laddie Paul, 21, of 3518 Pearl Avenue. Kotai, treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital, was listed in fair condition. The bullet struck him while Paul was shooting at an object in the water near Ford Road and Black River. Emery Feket, 13, was present.

Berlin Heights native, graduate of the local high school, he planned to study in the fall and assisted his father in the Kelble Brothers meat business. He was football team manager, track member, booster club and science society affiliate active in athletics.

Elyria’s Great YMCA Drive Raised 127000 in 1911
Forty years ago Elyria conducted an eight day YMCA fund drive raising 127000, about 850 per resident for a proposed 75000 building with a 100 room dormitory. A large committee led by T T Robinson organized 20 members, with campaigns across schools churches and civic groups, clock banners, and volunteer teams to reach the goal amid public rallies and newspaper support.

Two French Aircraft Crashes Kill or Missing
Sixty persons are dead or missing after two French planes crash. An Air France C-54 with 50 aboard went down in the Persian Gulf near Bahrein Island. 44 believed drowned. Six rescued, six bodies recovered. 38 missing. A military transport with 16 aboard vanished between Tanaarive and Tamatave, Madagascar. The four engine plane carried 43 passengers and seven crew, all but one displaced. Most aboard were French. Pilot reported landing attempt before sinking.
