Senators stall VA nominee over Agent Orange benefits
Three Democratic senators including Sherrod Brown Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden will block a full Senate vote on Dr. David Shulkin the nominee for VA under secretary for health until the department reports on extending disability benefits to Air Force reservists possibly exposed to Agent Orange. The move centers on 1500 to 2100 reservists from 1972 to 1982 at bases in Ohio Pennsylvania and Massachusetts and follows VA consideration of a presumption of exposure for C 123 aircraft crews and workers. Shulkin would oversee a 9 million veteran system amid efforts to cut wait times after last year’s Phoenix VA scandal.
