Yearling Auction Is Major Gamble at Saratoga

The annual thoroughbred yearling sale at Saratoga is a high stakes gamble. Buyers rely on breeding and appearance, while many lots flop or soar. notable bets include New Broom at Cushman’s bid and Cosmic Bomb’s $29,500 purchase that won $250,000. Big spenders like Norman Church and Millionaire Sam Riddle shaped outcomes, while quirky bidding wars and social rivalries fueled the market.
