A jury awarded the family of a smoker $1 million in a landmark case against a tobacco company. The verdict found the company liable for damages related to the illness and death of the plaintiff, asserting deceptive practices and failure to warn about risks.
A grain elevator disaster in Haysville Kansas widens the death toll to five as a newly found victim dies. Other items note a graduating class crash fatality and a deadly Route 304 intersection crash. A separate hate crime case in Jasper Texas could carry the death penalty. The Chronicle Telegram reports a temporary site outage.
Mayor Keys unveils a $1.2 million recreation center plan for South Park funded by a $400,000 FirstMerit grant, $200,000 in donor matches, and $800,000 in federal CDBG money. Construction aimed for spring start and completion by late 1999 pending council approval. The project, supported by the NAACP chapter, seeks to avoid local tax money.
In Lorain, Century Park on East Erie Avenue sees abandoned lifeguards and debris strewn beaches while Lakeview Park on the west side is well maintained. Councilman Jeff Sedivy criticizes unequal funding as a $1.3 million park program advances. A planned cleanup starts today with potential state grant funds totaling about $153,000 to rehab the parking lot and beach erosion control, of which the city would cover 25 percent if awarded.
Elyria West High School could reopen for an all day kindergarten center this fall as a district committee recommends the plan. A June 23 board vote is set. 220 students would attend via lottery with two slots per elementary school. Start up costs are 659,185 funded by federal and state sources and district set-aside money.
Elyria High School appointed Dick Kerschbaum, a 28 year veteran with 22 coaching awards, as the new head football coach and social studies teacher at Elyria. He succeeds Darrell Mayne, who left to coach at Upper Arlington. School athletic director Mark McGuire praised the hire.
Elyria seven year old Robby Ortiz sought a prime seat behind the Pirates dugout for the Indians game with his grandparents Bill and Darlene Dernarcu. A fly ball during batting practice struck him in the eye and his head pounded though staff iced him and he returned briefly before his eyesight worsened prompting his grandparents to take action.
