Drop in death rate changed families and society
A sociologist highlights how reductions in infant mortality from one in seven to one in 70 and higher life expectancy to 98 by age 15 transformed family life. Orphanages closed, grandparents took larger roles, and marriage longevity grew while empty nests became common as parents raised smaller families. The piece contrasts past indifference to loss with modern parental ties and enduring marriages, then shifts to a cemetery monument recalling a family with five children who died young, and the father’s humble inscription.
