Harbor patrol doomed by steel slump at Lorain port
The Port of Lorain faces potential loss of its harbor patrol as a 33 percent drop in port traffic follows a steel industry slowdown. Executive Director John Sulpizio cites reduced cargo activity, lower city tax revenue from U S Steel, and police staffing limits leading to possible program elimination. The patrol, funded about 5000 dollars annually, relies on a police officer and an LPA boat to enforce boating laws and safety. The authority seeks a retired officer with boating experience to fill the role if possible.
