Senate vote cuts food stamp aid under new measure
The Senate approved a 1.8 billion dollar reduction in food stamp funding by a 77 to 17 vote. The bill lowers the maximum annual income for most recipients from about 14 000 to 11 000 for a family of four while preserving higher limits for seniors and the disabled. The measure also delays inflation adjustments and imposes workfare and state control provisions as part of a broader overhaul to become a block grant in 1982.
