Park attack suspect hid in mud as searches continued
Brad Dicken reports Matthew Plas, a 25 year old homeless man facing 17 charges including attempted murder and attempted rape, was found face down in a swampy area of Carlisle Reservation by Metro Parks rangers while police pursued him for the assault on Shawn Stevens. Stevens, a 43 year old mother of three, was shot in the back and beaten with a tree limb after a chance encounter earlier that day. her purse and keys were found in Plas's car though authorities say he fled.

A large oak felled in East Park caused a 1 09 p m outage affecting 2 001 customers in Eastern Heights with restoration within six hours. A second wave darkened downtown and south Elyria for about three hours starting at 8 34 p m affecting 1 000 customers. West side outages hit 1 691 near Elyria West High School three minutes later. Police reported no major problems.
