Fossil Hunters Uncover Oldest Tree Wattiera in New York
In upstate New York near Albany Frank Mannolini and Linda Henrick recovered crown and trunk impressions of Wattiera, touted in Nature as the oldest known tree. The 28 foot trunk fragment and other pieces were found near the Gilboa area, tying to the Gilboa stumps and the region's fossil forest history. Mannolini mourns sister Sharon Mannolini, the museum paleontology collection manager, who died in a car crash four years ago.
