Phoenix report notes Ted Turner pursued a program exchange with the Soviet Union while WTBS and CNN press meetings discussed CBS takeover. The plan would put Atlanta Braves broadcasts on Moscow television if finalized, but Turner was absent from the press event.
The normally talkative Turner has stopped giving interviews, leaving media and colleagues puzzled as TV editor Shannon Jewell notes the shift and quotes a closed stance on recent topics.
WTBS plans a six hour documentary on the Soviet Union as part of the American Portrait world series. Soviet reporters will work at the CNN newsroom in Atlanta as analysts and official spokesmen on camera. The project aims to present a positive, documentary style rather than hard news. CNN marks five years on air as Ed Turner seeks a conservative host for Crossfire and comments on Turner CBS talks.
