The United Auto Workers board approves reaffiliation with the AFL-CIO ending a 13 year split. UAW will pay about 2.5 million dollars in yearly dues and hopes to boost political influence and organizing help while opposing Social Security benefit cuts and certain recovery programs. US sees potential 6 million ton grain deal with Soviet Union
Agriculture Secretary John Block voiced hope the Soviet Union will accept a U.S. offer to supply 6 million tons of grain, 3 million wheat and 2 million corn, by September 30 as talks in London advance toward normalized trade. The Soviets have not committed, but Block says a deal hinges on Soviet need and port capacity. If agreed, it would coincide with the expiration of the five year grain pact.
