In South Africa, thousands of blacks clashed at the Crossroads squatter camp fringes. At least six were shot as hundreds of shacks burned while police used buckshot and tear gas to disperse fighters among vigilantes and militant youths.
Elyria High School graduate Thomas Ball rose to chief master sergeant at US Space Command in Colorado Springs. He oversees enlisted personnel across Air Force and Navy staff, reports to the command head and Defense Secretary, and recently earned a three year extension. Ball, 30 years in service, says Space Command monitors space hardware and protects satellites. He envisions returning home to Elyria later but remains stationed at the Colorado base.

Lorain police said an intruder who stabbed 26 year old Air Force sergeant Ralph Harris Jr also tried to attack his girlfriend Elba Ortiz. Ediberto Huertas, 27, was to be arraigned on aggravated murder and aggravated burglary charges after being captured at his home. Harris died at Lorain St Joseph Hospital after the early Saturday incident.
Nelson Stud Welding Division of TRW Inc workers vote 100 to 24 to approve a three year contract with Local 1539 IAMAW nine hours before a planned strike. The Elyria Lorain division makes metal fasteners and stud welding products. wage and pension details were not released.
