The Republic Steel Corp and the CIO organized for a major test over reopening the Newton Steel plant in Monroe Michigan after a vote showed a job return majority. The CIO denied reopening, mobilized special police, and warned of authorities amid the seven state strike.
Showers tonight and tomorrow with cooler air in central and northern areas. Pressure pattern features a Pacifi c Northwest to Texas to the Ohio Valley trough and a high over the lake region and Mid Atlantic. Showers cover the low pressure area and lake region with heavier activity in parts of Kansas and Missouri.
Ohio Governor Martin L Davey warns of possible riots and bloodshed in the steel strike and invites leaders from both sides to a Friday conference. Invitations go to Republic chairman Tom Girdler Youngstown Sheet & Tube president Frank Purnell I O Steel Workers chairman Philip Murray and state CIO director John Owens. Inland Steel not included as it is Chicago centered. Youngstown Sheet & Tube officials indicate they might accept the invitation.
Coroner in Burlington Iowa called an inquest into a collision between a Foster Stages bus from Cedar Rapids and a large truck near Morning Sun. Three people died Mrs B T Cunningham 49 of Madison Mo Charles Johnson 45 of Fort Madison Mo and bus driver Frankfort Mo resident identified as the driver died. Clinton Giese 27 Burlington Iowa driver of the truck died while being described as fatally injured. Mary Hester Cunningham 22 Madison Mo survived with a skull fracture.
Maj. Gen. Ben Hebard Fuller, commandant from 1939 to 1934, died in Naval Hospital after a brief pneumonia illness. Born February 23, 1870, in Biz Rapids Michigan, he graduated from the Naval Academy in 1891 and served aboard the USS Columbia during the Spanish American War.
Rev. A. A. Schreiner, 79, a Catholic priest, is in critical condition at Galion hospital after his car struck a wrecked vehicle near New Washington. Injured Columbus salesmen George Ferguson, 78, with spinal injuries and broken ribs, and George Logenhausha, 42, with a fractured collarbone, are hospitalized in Columbus.
In Wasserloomburg Castle Austria on June 9 the Duke of Windsor announced a private useful life for himself and the Duchess. Through Lieut Dudley Forwood he said they will not live in idleness and have no definite plans yet.
Senator Copeland called for a broad Senate investigation into national labor disputes and strikes. He supported Senator Bridges's resolution to probe alleged mail interference by strikers in the steel controversy and urged broad coverage of the entire steel strike to foster peaceful labor relations.
Donald D. Meyers an electrician at the National Tube Company led a petition for Third Ward councilman. He faces incumbent Seward N. Black who seeks a second term. Mayor Don A. Baird seeks reelection petitions, as does Henry Sassmanhausen. Oberlin council hopefuls Major Charles R. Comings and James C. McCullough also filed petitions.
Mansfield June 9 The Dominion Electric Mfg Co shuts down as about 250 workers strike for 45 cents per hour minimum wage 45 hour week and a closed shop with United Electrical and Radio Workers as sole bargaining agent. Manager MecCleland says the plant will not operate.
Georgia voters show a lead for repeal with 69 160 to 60 381 from 906 of 1700 precincts as returns run incomplete. Prohibitionists and repealists claim victory amid uncertainty whether the state will end its bone dry law and move to a local option system. The New Deal program for Georgia also appears ratified by a solid margin.
Nearly 50 Elyria Rotary Club members toured the Ohio Public Service Company power plant in Lorain after a luncheon. J. B. Johnson spoke on plant construction and power production and shared experiences from a Tennessee Valley Authority project visit. He then led a plant tour showing operations firsthand.
Oddities from United Press report a Cavalier, North Dakota store exchanged many cream cones for eres, with 3,904 trades in a day, reflecting a surplus of eges and dwindling stock of medicines for stomach ailments. In Los Angeles divorce action, Joseph Muzgar claims his wife confined him to the elronen house or cellar for relatives, and allowed their dog in bed and his son to swear at him. Cleveland police gear heat orders shift as Safety Director extends summer coat-off rule to all officers on or off duty.
Manslaughter charges were dismissed by the grand jury against Ervinker, 29, a Lorain sailor, in the death of Mrs. Mary Sacarades. The coroner testified injuries from Baker were not the probable cause. Baker was released. indictments were handed to eight others, with 12 cases dismissed and 46 witnesses testified.
In Elyria public schools nearly 5 000 students finish classroom work for 1936 37. High school seniors receive diplomas tonight after completing final exams. Elementary grades under fourth have no final exams. higher grades may have exams at teachers’ discretion. One test per grading period is required. No school tomorrow while teachers grade and prepare year end reports. Students return Friday at 1 p m for report cards and next year instructions, with no classes Friday. Graduating class completed exams last week and prepare for tonight’s commencement.
President William Green announces an emergency one per cent monthly assessment on all union members to fund a war chest against the Committee for Industrial Organization. Affiliates have agreed to voluntary contributions starting June 1, to be ratified at the Denver convention beginning October 1. The AF L's strength is about 2.2 million, aiming to raise roughly $29,000 monthly.
About a thousand Timken Roller Bearing and Steel workers returned to work in Canton after ratifying a peace agreement that settled a strike that began last Thursday. Capacity production resumed today as the divisions restarted operations.
Los Angeles detectives announce impending arrests in the 15 year old murder of film director William Desmond Taylor. Capt. Bert Wallis of the Homicide Squad says new evidence nearly solves the case, including an unfired bullet matching the fatal slug. One suspect previously unmentioned is now under scrutiny.
About 2500 people including 300 delegates are expected in Lorain for the sixth annual AHEPA eleventh district convention over the weekend. Sunday features open church services at St Nicholas Church with sermons in Greek and English, a parade to the Antlers hotel, and a lakeside program with tea and sports. Monday offers morning and afternoon sessions, a banquet headlined by V I Chepidis, with remarks by district governor George Lucas, and the selection of Miss AHEPA. Invitations extend to Governor, U S Senators, a congressman, and several state officials. visitors travel by special cars and buses. officers are to be elected Tuesday and a new convention host city chosen.

Elyria lodge of Elks sponsors Flag Day program at Elks Hall Monday evening with Frank T. Cullinan of Cuyahoga County prosecuting attorney delivering the main address. The meeting also outlined plans to welcome the national Elks Good Will Tour visiting Elyria on July 21.
In Baltimore on June 9 the Fisher Body Corp plant shut as 100 workers began a sit down strike to win local recognition of the United Auto Workers Union. About 1,000 workers at the Chevrolet Assembly plant next door lost jobs due to lack of bodies from Fisher. CIO leaders Michael Gallow and James Shabby said the strike followed an insult claim against a CIO member and that workers would stay out until the union is recognized, with wage demands likely.
Washington reports John L. Lewis chairman of the CIO said he assured Michigan Governor Frank Murphy that steps would restore power facilities in Saginaw Valley. A nine member USW committee led by Windham Morimer planned to travel to Flint to prevent a new working agreement and resume service. The strike began two and a half hours after a union wage contract was negotiated. Lewis called the strike a probable misunderstanding and said a committee would restore service immediately.
Governor Murphy ordered United Automobile Workers to resume power to Flint Bay City Saginaw and other Saginaw Valley cities as Consumers Power strike crippled electric service. Union leaders in Detroit were telephoned to end the outage and bring plants and hospitals back to full operation.
In Lansing Michigan on June 2 the governor ordered the Michigan National Guard and state police placed in readiness amid the Consumers Power Company strike. Commissioner Oxar G. Olander announced troopers would stay at their posts in the Sesinan Valier area, with law enforcement in constant contact as authorities monitor the situation for possible intervention in the public interest.
