Temperatures near 100 in the Middle West persist as a heat wave continues. County commissioners approved a $165 090 relief bond issue the last for bonds in relief tasks representing one tenth of one percent of the general tax duplicate. County considers West Bridge improvement plan

County commissioners approved a survey of the West Bridge street bridge to brace weakened sidewalks. as a preliminary step they authorized County Surveyor J W Warden to negotiate with the State Highway Department on widening the bridge and improving the West Bridge and Huron streets intersection the shared Route 57 59 junction. Property needed for the project has been or may be acquired by the city. the effort would be a joint state county and city proposition.

Raymond Moley former adviser to President Roosevelt returned to Olmsted Falls to deliver the commencement address for 33 graduates. He urged the class to take chances and try new things, stressing democracy as a quest built from mistakes. He cited Jefferson Emerson Whitman and Henry Adams as examples and paid tribute to Dr. K F Gelser. Valedictorian Josephine Harris salutatorian Pauline Guscot and president Dale Hecker were among those in the program.

Steel merger talks under way link Republic Otis Corrigan firms

Cleveland June 9 negotiations for a proposed merger of Republic Steel Corporation of Cleveland Youngstown and the Otis Steel Company and the Corrigan McKinney Steel Company of Cleveland are under way. Backed by New York financial interests with Republic support the plan is not favored by Otis and Corrigan McKinney interests. Corrigan McKinney is controlled by Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company which is linked to Cliffs Corporation with stakes in Republic Otis and other steel concerns. Continental Shares Inc holds 349125 Cliffs shares and a 50000 share block is collateral in a Chase National Bank loan default auction slated Monday end of Continental revival tied to no direct link to the auction. Republic Steel was formed in April 1930 as a merger of several steel firms.

Two Portsmouth athletes die within weeks in accidents

In Portsmouth on June 3 Carlton Eugene Williams, age 1&, died from a ruptured intestine after a baseball impact to the abdomen. He is the second local athlete to die in two weeks, following Floyd Warner, 19, who died of a heart attack during a boxing match.
