State waives fixed tutoring providers in Ohio districts

Elyria and Lorain schools may choose their own tutors instead of fixed providers like Sylvan and Boys & Girls Club after Ohio's waiver approval. Ann Schloss says districts used federal funds to contract with 10 to 15 agencies and served about 170 students in 2010 11. Lorain plans to keep using Boys & Girls Club with 21st Century Tutoring funding totaling 950000 in 2011 12 and an expected 800000 next year. The state seeks broader tutoring reforms under No Child Left Behind waivers granted to eight more states. Ohio reports improvement plans from Superintendent Stan Heffner.
