Miami vote ousts gay rights law in Dade County

In a special election, Dade County voters approved repeal of the local gay rights ordinance by a 69.3 to 30.6 percent margin, despite 41 percent turnout. Anita Bryant touted the result as vindication of God and moral values while a civil rights leader signaled possible federal action. The measure had tied homosexuals to housing and employment protections, sparking a heated clash among churches, politicians, and residents.

British can't leave Uganda until Amin's return

Uganda barred all Britons from leaving the country pending the return of President Idi Amin from London. The order left about 30 British businessmen and missionaries effectively hostages while Amin was abroad. Radio Uganda said Amin may travel via ship from France or Ireland, but details were unclear. A Ugandan official urged security to stop Britons from leaving, warning against attempts to rescue them.

Elyria votes down 2.4 million bond for school repairs

Voters defeat a 2.4 million bond issue to fund improvements at five Elyria City School buildings by 5,317 to 5,043, a 51.3 to 48.7 percent margin. Superintendent Showalter expresses concern as administrators weigh next steps and potential 3 mill levy options amid aging facilities at Prospect, Roosevelt, Jefferson Junior High, Hamilton, and Elyria High.

Weather update with cool, cloudy skies and showers

A weather brief notes cooler conditions with mostly cloudy skies and a chance of showers today with highs in the mid 40s. Tonight brings low temperatures around 44 degrees after a high of 54 degrees recorded yesterday afternoon.

Area voters pass and defeat mostly on money issues

In a light turnout the area voted on 15 school related questions and six municipal items. Nine school measures and four municipal items passed while three multi million dollar bonds were considered. Only the Keystone Local School District remodeling and furnishing bond of 2.2 million gained approval.

Oberlin school levy defeated after recount

A recount in Oberlin shows the 6 mill school levy defeat despite earlier results indicating a narrow pass. The Lorain County Board of Elections reported 738 votes against and 684 in favor, with officials saying the levy was needed to keep schools open.

Elyria approves income tax hike to revamp city budget

Elyria voters backed a one half percent income tax increase, generating an estimated 900000 this year and about 5.5 million over the levy’s three years for debt retirement. The finance committee plans to meet, rehiring some laid-off workers funded by federal CETA money, and banks may be tapped as the city revises the 1977 budget to avert a projected shortfall. County and city election results at a glance

Area results show County levies passing and defeating measures. OUNTY Anti-Drug Levy 25 mill passes third attempt while Mental Retardation Levy 12 mill passes by about 2 percent. Numerous city races, school levies and bond issues across Lorain Cuyahoga Medina counties, with several incumbents reelected or advancing to November.
