Potato Planting Signals Record Acreage Rise This Year

Potatoes planted in the United States show stronger indications of a larger overall acreage than in the past five years. Preliminary southern state figures place early potato acreages around 383 000 versus 447 000 last year, with eight second early states generally higher than last year and Kentucky stable. Overall, these states report about 9 percent more land in potatoes, and conditions on May 1 are about 4 percent better than a year ago.
