New chief prepares to take over CIA
McLaughlin, the bespectacled deputy director, will become acting CIA chief in July after George Tenet’s departure. The pick comes as U S intelligence agencies brace for high profile summer events and potential terrorist threats similar to Madrid’s March bombings. McLaughlin, nicknamed Merlin, is described as meticulous and cerebral, a contrast to Tenet’s gregarious style.
