Cameron Park Texas colonia poverty remains despite progress
Cameron Park near Brownsville, Texas, once plagued by gunfire and lack of utilities, shows improvements with pavement and in home amenities, yet remains the nation's poorest community by median per capita income. About 6,000 residents, many migrant workers from Mexico, face great poverty and low education levels. Government programs and bonds aim to fix drainage, water, and housing issues as colonias expand.
