Autobiography snippets reveal Lincoln death and Civil War aftermath
The excerpt recalls Lincoln's assassination and the national mourning, then shifts to Lee's Army return to North Carolina. It describes ruined farms, displaced families, and freed slaves now mustering as soldiers, with Union troops distributing rations as Sherman advances. The narrative notes dwindling regiments and ongoing war end uncertainty. It ends with a teaser of Japan's financial threat in China, tied to American loans.
