Forest Service to hire 500 fewer firefighters this year
Forest Service Chief Thomas Tidwell says auto spending cuts will reduce hires to about 10 000 firefighters, down from 10 500 last year, while adding three new air tankers to fight fires across the West. The agency faces budget limits but aims for high initial attack success and may use private contractors if needed.
