May 16 mass casualty drill in New London offers lessons
The May 16 mass casualty exercise at the old New London High School united Fire and Police agencies from Huron County. Participants included the Ruggles Tory Rochester Norwalk Monroeville and New London fire departments Firelands Ambulance Service the Sheriff Special Response Team and local police and Salvation Army volunteers. A pipe hostage scenario with a classroom fire tested response as a phony smoke filled halls and an injury to New London Fire Chief Jim Pfeifer occurred. The drill continued after treatment at Fisher-Titus Hospital, and organizers hailed the overall experience while noting communication remains challenging.
