Family background key to teen drug use says Stanford study
Stanford's Dr. Harold Blum asserts family income beliefs and parental behavior drive teen drug use more than the generation gap. From a 12 year study of 100 intact middle and upper middle class San Francisco Peninsula families, he links high risk to income, religiosity, politics, parental substance use, and attitudes toward authority. The findings appear in Horatio Alger's Children and highlight predictive variables for chronic marijuana use, LSD, heroin, or heavy alcohol and cigarette consumption.

Stockdale lone drilling ban foe in Lake Erie vote
AP says Sen. E. Stockdale of Ohio was the sole senator to oppose a two-year oil and gas drilling ban for Lake Erie. He calls the bill silly and says pollution control requires a US-Canada compact, not state-by-state laws, noting most wells are run by Canadian firms. He urges a binding international agreement.
