Lamprey Control Keeps Great Lakes Native Fishes Safe
Gonzalez notes a 50 year lamprey control program for Great Lakes populations with treatments every 3 to 5 years. Heather Hettinger of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources says Betise and Platte rivers and other Lake Michigan waterways have long been treated. Lampricides pose limited human or environmental risk while quickly biodegrading. Adult lampreys reach 2 to 3 feet and latch onto fish with disk mouths and sharp teeth, weakening or killing hosts. Native Atlantic origin, they enter fresh water via shipping canals.
